Being a bodyguard is a thankless task, and all that talk of taking a bullet for the boss must make your day-to-day life a touch stressful.
Still, that’s no excuse for David Cameron’s bodyguard dropping the ball so badly, following a pretty spectacular brain fade on a British Airways flight from New York to London Heathrow this week.
Given that emotions are running high following January 31, or Brexit Day, and David Cameron is the man who set all of that in motion when he called for a Brexit referendum, now is not the time for slipping up.
The police bodyguard has been suspended, reports the Guardian:
…Cameron’s passport and a loaded gun were found in the toilet cubicle of the British Airways flight…
The royalty and specialist protection unit officer’s passport was found alongside the former prime minister’s and all three items were handed over to flight crew, with the gun subsequently being removed from the plane, according to the reports.
“The captain confirmed a gun had been found, which freaked everyone out,” one passenger on the flight was quoted as saying.
The gun, believed to be a 9mm Glock 17 pistol, was reported to have been left by the officer after he took off his holster while using the toilet.
Kim Jong Un’s bodyguards run in perfect formation alongside a moving vehicle, and David Cameron’s bodyguard can’t remember to pick up his gun when leaving the toilet.
Here’s one quote from an unnamed passenger:
“We were waiting to take off when a guy started to show pictures on his phone of a gun and two passports. One was David Cameron’s – he said he found [it] in the toilet. They were just resting on the side by the sink. He was stunned by what he saw.”
Not ideal.
As a former prime minister, Cameron is entitled to security provided by the Met’s Specialist Protection unit.
No word on whether the protection works both ways, and the bodyguard is also responsible for protecting livestock from Cameron.
