If you’ve been paying attention to wine trends then you already know that rosé is the drink for this summer.
Let’s face it, the transition from rainy winter months and red wine, to bright summer days and a dry white, can be a bit jarring. Rosé, on the other hand, makes for the perfect middle ground.
It also comes in a range of gorgeous pink colours that look as good as they taste – provided you find the right wine. And by ‘right wine’, I mean one of superior quality.
Anyone who has ever had the misfortune of drinking a sub-par rosé knows that when a winemaker gets it wrong, they get it very wrong. I’m talking ‘hints of old sock’ wrong.
Luckily, you don’t have to break out the wine catalogues or reviews to find the ideal rosé for any occasion, because Rupert Wines have created three of the very best, to suit any budget.
Even better news – when you buy these wines, you’re doing a good deed, and that makes you a better person.
Anyway, we don’t want to ruin that surprise just yet, but we’ll get there in the end.
Here are the three pink wines worth dabbling in, complete with a little fancy wine-talk that you can use to impress at your next gathering.
Protea Rosé 2019
This affordable, yet fantastic rosé, is the faintest pink blush colour and comes in a beautiful bottle that can be up-cycled. Expect to encounter hints of raspberry, peach and apple blossom.
Impress your friends:
The palate is bright and juicy with lovely fresh acidity and an abundance of ripe red berry fruit: raspberry, strawberry and youngberry with a delightful citrus peel tang.
Jean Roi Rosé 2017
The pale copper pink blush colour combined with hints of peach blossom and honeydew melon make this is the perfect companion to that important announcement or toast.
Impress whoever is close by:
The palate is vivacious with the immediate impact of bright, juicy melon, peach and nectarine flavour making itself felt. The acidity is refreshing and in harmony with the fruit, adding a lovely lemon zest twist to the mouthful. Rounded and full with good length, the wine finishes dry with a gentle hint of citrus peel at the end.
Brut Rosé 2015
Its eye-catching faint salmon pink hue and bubbles that rise in a consistent vigorous, lively stream, make this the bubbly that you’ll want to have on hand at every and all summer celebrations.
Impress your guests:
Gentle berry notes on the nose – strawberry and raspberry with a slight cream and biscuit nuance. The palate is vibrant and lively with crisp berry fruit flavours – raspberries and strawberries that are still a touch tart – but deliciously so. Lovely ruby grapefruit and lime zest flavour balancing the berries. The wine is rounded, fleshy and long with a zippy, well-defined finish.
Right, on to that bit about you being a really good person…
For the month of October, if you visit the Anthonij Rupert Wyne estate tasting room, you’ll receive FREE tastings of the above wines in support of Pink Trees for Pauline.
Pink Trees for Pauline’s purpose is to create awareness, unite communities and raise money for those afflicted with cancer. To get involved, you can visit your local CANSA Care Centre and purchase a sheet of fabric or a ‘doek‘ to wrap either the trees in your neighbourhood or your head in the signature pink colour that we’ve come to associate with cancer awareness.
When you head on over to the Anthonij Rupert Wyne estate for your free tasting, you’ll notice that their trees are already decked out in bright pink fabric.
After your tasting when you’re selecting your wine of choice for purchase, or when you head over to the Rupert Wines website to stock up on some pink wine for delivery, you can do so with the knowledge that 10% of your purchase will be donated in aid of cancer patients receiving care and support.
There are no downsides here – you’ll get to drink excellent wine, and make a difference while you’re at it.
I’ll raise a glass to that.
Also, don’t forget about the Anthonij Rupert Protea Party on Saturday, October 26, which promises to be a great night out in the Winelands.
