Does reality TV get any lower than Keeping Up with the Kardashians?
Yes, it does.
Sadly, Keeping Up with the Zumas is exactly what you’re thinking it is, and filming with ‘Nkandla’s first family’ is apparently underway.
We don’t know if that’s going to the title of the series, but it wouldn’t surprise us.
Also, I would happily tune in each week if the show was just a single CCTV camera filming the inside of a prison cell, but alas, that is not the case.
Producer Legend Manqele sent out a series of tweets recently, showing a film crew on-site at Nkandla. Reporting below from IOL:
One of the photos shared by the producer was of Nonkanyiso Conco [above], who shares a son with Zuma.
The 25-year-old Vuma FM presenter was in traditional attire, sitting by the riverside, with a photographer seemingly capturing a footage of her.
Manqele said that through the young mother, the country would see the real Zuma family and many questions would be answered.
“I don’t know if she will say anything at this stage; however, I can assure you that we are working together,” said Manqele.
“The company is looking at walking a journey with her and it is going to be for public consumption through traditional media.”
Though there were no official dates yet, Manqele said Conco had a lot of stories to share with South Africa, and for him she was “the most interesting one”.
When asked by the Sunday Tribune if the former president would feature in any of the episodes, Manqele said: “Everyone is included.”
Manqele was clearly wowed when filming last week, calling it a “brilliant” experience.
Stunning, man – you should be proud.
As things stand, details are scarce, but Manqele said he “would be in a better position to give more details on the project next month”.
Given that VBS liquidators are after more than R7 million from Jacob Zuma to pay back his bond, and he risks losing Nkandla if he fails to do so, maybe he’s so desperate for cash that he’s opening his homestead up to film crews.
Either way, I feel like this is one bit of reality TV the country could do without.
I never thought I would say this, but let’s stick with The Bachelor SA and call it a day.
