Right – I’ll be playing the lottery this week.

Last week, we learnt of a Cape construction worker who cracked a R141 million PowerBall win, and we were happy for him.

Honestly, we were.

His wife had spoken about a dream where she “saw gold particles being sprinkled all over her husband”, which she believes “was a sign from God that her husband will soon be showered with blessings”.

They bought a ticket, won the big one, and good luck to them.

The latest lottery-winning story is a pretty heartwarming one, and features a domestic worker of more than 30 years who won R70 million in the PowerBall Plus draw of September 3.

Yes, she instantly quit her job, and is all set to start ticking off a to-do list:

Also on her to-do list is renovating the family home she shares with her daughter, grandchild and younger brother.

She wants take her family to Cape Town for the holidays as well, and will buy a smartphone.

We don’t know how much the range of iPhones will cost locally, but I reckon she can afford a few.

The winner, a single mother of one, purchased a ticket for R7,50, and didn’t know she had hit the motherlode until her employer lent a hand:

Speaking to Ithuba, she explained that she initially thought only four numbers that she played had won. It was only after she told her employer that she had won with four numbers that her employer made her aware that she had in fact won the big jackpot.

She immediately rushed back to the Shell garage where the cashier advised her to write her name and ID number on the back of her winning ticket and go to the offices of Ithuba to claim her winnings.

She said she was drowning in debt as she is the sole bread winner in her household.

If the story of a single mother, who has worked as a domestic worker for more than three decades and is drowning in debt, winning the big one doesn’t bring a smile to your face, I consider you dead inside.

I’m not sure this in any way increases your chance of winning, but let’s get back to that ‘Bible in hand’ reference earlier:

The night before the draw, she says she put her ticket in the Bible a friend had given her and went on her knees and prayed to God give her a sign that soon all her troubles will be over.

She said she could not sleep and again at 3am she asked God to bless her and her family with good fortunes.

Sadly, I reckon I would spontaneously combust if I tried prayer whilst clutching a Bible. For a shot at R70 million, though, it might be a risk worth taking.
