Summer is creeping closer, and so are those summer goals that we all feel pressured to set for ourselves every year.
Mark my words – headlines about bikini bodies and getting ‘summer ready’ are going to start appearing on your Facebook feeds and magazine racks very soon.
I have a different proposal. Instead of focusing on unobtainable beauty ideals this year, why not set healthy body habits that transcend the seasons and promote overall wellbeing?
This doesn’t have to be a complete lifestyle overhaul. I’m a firm believer in the ‘one-step-at-a-time’ approach to life, so let’s start by tweaking daily diet.
To get you started, I looked into which food, if incorporated into your daily food intake, would have the most benefits for your health.
An easy, tasty option? Yoghurt.
Here are four excellent reasons to incorporate more yoghurt into your daily routine.
1. It’s rich in important nutrients
Yoghurt contains a bit of nearly every single nutrient that your body needs. Just one regular size serving of yoghurt provides you with 49% of your daily calcium needs, 38% of your daily need for phosphorus, 12% for magnesium, and 18% for potassium.
It’s also high in B-vitamins, and especially vitamin B12 and riboflavin, both of which can help protect against heart disease.
2. It’s high in protein
Protein has been shown to support your metabolism by increasing your energy expenditure and therefore the number of calories you can burn in a day.
It’s also key to appetite regulation.
If you’re getting in some reps early in the morning, you should look into Sir Fruit smoothies, which contain a healthy portion of yoghurt.
Smoothies are perfect for exercising because liquids like smoothies leave the stomach faster, which means they get energy to the rest of your body faster.
I’m going to take this opportunity to say the thing that we’ve all been thinking, but that no health fundi is ready to admit.
Plain yoghurt tastes like sadness, which is why Sir Fruit smoothies come in three enjoyable flavours so that your yoghurt intake is also your daily treat.
3. Yoghurt can strengthen your immune system
Yoghurt contains probiotics which have been shown to reduce inflammation, improve gut health, and stave off certain viral infections.
4. It can help to protect against osteoporosis
Yoghurt contains some key nutrients for maintaining bone health, including calcium, protein, potassium, phosphorus and, sometimes, vitamin D.
And there you have it. A simple change can make all the difference.
I’ve started taking a 300ml pineapple, coconut, banana, yoghurt and oats smoothie from Sir Fruit to work. It’s a tasty way to get my daily yoghurt in, and also a healthier alternative to a carb-fuelled muffin or croissant.
If you’re really serious about your smoothies, you can skip the 300ml and get the tw0-litre or five-litre options – consider your yoghurt itch scratched.
Consider yourself cultured.
