When the EFF run out of arguments, they resort to violence and intimidation.
We’ve known this for years, but two recent examples involve abusing security guards at the 2018 SONA, and threats of violence against the Daily Maverick’s Marianne Thamm after she dubbed them the ‘trash champagne revolutionaries’.
Mix it up, guys, you don’t want to look like one-trick ponies.
Sadly, yesterday was another example of how the comrades and revolutionaries are really just thugs in red overalls, as they disrupted the 2019-20 Public Enterprises budget speech.
EFF MPs took the floor of committee room E249 in an effort to intimidate Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, who was speaking at the time.
Ostensibly, their gripes had to do with the Public Protector’s findings against Gordhan, and all that SARS ‘rogue unit’ nonsense.
More from Fin24:
EFF MP Sam Matiase rose on a point of order, saying that Gordhan should not be allowed to address Parliament as an executive when he has a Public Protector finding against him. Gordhan has denied allegations and is challenging the report in court.
Chair for the sitting Mmatlala Boroto told Matiase that what the EFF MP was raising constituted a point of debate and not a point of order. Other EFF MPs raised points of order in the minutes that followed, insisting that they would not leave the chamber and Gordhan would not address them.
After Boroto asked all the EFF MPs to leave the chamber if they refused to hear the Minister, the EFF MPs walked over to the podium where Gordhan was standing, waiting to deliver his budget vote.
Too long didn’t read? EFF thuggery.
Gordhan wasn’t going to be pushed around, and at various stages, you can hear him daring EFF MPs to up the stakes in their “intimidation” and warning them that “they must touch me”.
Off we go:
As is always the case, other MPs later condemned the EFF’s actions with all the usual platitudes about regrettable disgraceful behaviour.
It’s just sad that performances like these are exactly what riles up the EFF’s support base, and exactly why the juvenile delinquency will continue.
