Just the other day in the office, we were wondering what had happened to Adam Catzavelos.
If you were out of the country or on a social media cleanse last August, he’s the guy who went on holiday to Greece and sent that racist video to his pals on WhatsApp.
In the video, he says: “let me give you a weather forecast here. Blue skies, beautiful day, amazing sea, and not one k***** in sight”.
Somebody shared that video, the Twitterati got involved and things spiralled in a big way. Adam then tried to issue an apology but no one was buying it.
His family also tried to distance themselves and their restaurant from the scandal, but it didn’t work out that well.
Now, according to IOL, they’ve been accused of rebranding their former restaurant in Joburg and keeping Catzavelos in the family business.
Catzavelos’s father George told The Star the family has nothing to do with the establishment, the Urban Eatery, in Braamfontein which opened after The Smokehouse and Grill closed in August last year.
“We have nothing to do with Smokehouse, we got out of it in August/September,” he said. “The new restaurant is the Urban Eatery and we have absolutely nothing to do with it.”
The family’s business endeavours have been closely monitored since the video emerged, not least by the EFF, and the falling out has taken its toll:
…George, said that the family had not been doing well since his son’s racially fuelled video went viral.
“We’re not very happy with each other but it’s done, it’s finished and the mistake was made and that’s it,” he added.
Well, we now know that Adam is back in the country, because he is due to appear in court on charges of crimen injuria, reports News24.
Following his comments, the EFF laid a criminal charge of crimen injuria against Catzavelos, with the South African Human Rights Commission also saying they would investigate the matter.
If your Latin is a bit rusty, crimen injuria is a wilful injury to someone’s dignity caused by the use of obscene or racially offensive language or gestures.
Catzavelos will appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on May 28.
No doubt that will be a media circus, with various political parties grandstanding outside in an attempt to score points.
We’ll keep you updated.
