Today, the closing arguments will be presented in the case of murder-accused Rob Packham.
Given the evidence we have seen so far, public sentiment isn’t exactly in his favour, and that rather odd hide-and-seek game with cameras last month probably didn’t help his cause.
The State’s case has been covered step by step, but in a recent TimesLIVE video, Anthony Molyneaux has put all of the pieces together.
By using CCTV footage from the case, plus forensic reports, eyewitness testimonies, crime scene photos and cellphone records, TimesLIVE has plotted a sequence of events which the state says ties her husband to her murder.
Coming in at a touch over four minutes, it’s a pretty decent overview of where things stand:
What that video doesn’t cover is Packham’s reaction, on the witness stand, to State prosecutor Susan Galloway presenting him with two different scenarios.
Below from News24:
The first version that prosecutor Susan Galloway put to him while on the stand involved an unidentified attacker who killed Gill, ostensibly in a hijacking. He at first said it was a possibility but then did not want to speculate as he simply didn’t know…
“My lady, I guess it is one possibility… I am afraid I don’t know. I did not put that scenario. I honestly don’t know. I can’t speculate. I don’t want to.” He says the vehicle theory is “fantasy” and the similarities are a coincidence.
Then there’s the second version of events, where Packham “found himself in a corner because of his affair and killed his wife – making up cover stories along the way, getting rid of evidence, and setting it up to look like a hijacking”:
Packham’s response? “I categorically denied what the prosecutor has just said”. He says this is nothing more than speculation and maintains he is innocent.
All eyes on the High Court in Cape Town for those closing arguments, then. Today’s proceedings have wrapped up, but here’s what went down:
The closing arguments will continue at 10:30AM tomorrow.
