‘Funemployed’ isn’t really my new favourite word.
That honour goes to ‘jobbernowl’, which is another word for ‘idiot’ guaranteed to (further) confuse the trolls in any comments section.
‘Funemployed’ is a good one, though.
It’s an informal combination of ‘fun’ and ‘unemployed’.
Here’s a handy infographic courtesy of Dictionary.Com, who named it their word of the day for today:
If you click that ‘full definition’ button, you get the following:
adjective
without a paid job but enjoying the free time: Ask one of your funemployed friends to come along with you.noun (used with a plural verb)
funemployed people collectively (usually preceded by the ): Most of the funemployed are under 30.
The idea is to embrace unemployment as a ‘lifestyle choice’ that allows you to pursue your passions – something that seems rather ignorant in a country like South Africa, where the unemployment rate is so high.
It’s also the domain of the wealthy. In order to survive your ‘funemployment,’ you’re going to need some serious cash, which is usually where mom, dad and that trust fund come in.
We’ve all seen the ‘funemployed’ hipster hoards loitering around coffee shops in the middle of the day pretending to read the mandatory Jack Kerouac novel, skateboard under the arm, waiting for the working masses to get off the clock and keep them company.
Most of us have things like rent and food to worry about, so that’s not really an option.
Still, you do you, and enjoy that ‘funemployment’.
