Artists might say that the world is their canvas, and I guess that extends to political posters in the lead up to national elections.
By now you’ve surely seen the DA’s posters dotted throughout Cape Town, with Alan Winde, the DA’s Premier candidate for the Western Cape, asking for your vote.
That’s Alan above, and he’s running on a campaign of cleaning up Eskom, fixing the Metrorail mess, and increased policing to fight back against crime, in case you were wondering.
The DA is actually having a bit of a problem with people defacing their posters, and have even gone as far as to offer a reward for information about those who are vandalising the posters:
Here’s party spokesperson Refiloe Nt’sekhe on the Citizen:
He said they were, however, concerned about “consistent reports” that other political parties were defacing, removing or damaging their posters…
“No doubt other parties are daunted by our extensive poster operation and footprint.”
They announced a cash reward of R50,000 for information sent to them on DA poster defacement, removal or interference, when such information could lead to successful prosecution of the offender.
I would guess that they’re referring to people who tear down and destroy posters, like those EFF supporters we saw last week, and not to those who doodle a little.
Take for example these pictures sent to us over the past few days, which show two Alan Winde posters with some black marker additions.
Nice to see somebody take the high ground, and not scrawl a cock and balls, I guess:
Fetching eyelashes, although the unibrow could use a little work.
Then there’s this one, featuring a soul patch and a moustache once more:
Again, soul patches are out, so please spread the world.
I think we can conclude two things here. Firstly, we have a mature graffiti artist on our hands.
Secondly, grow a ‘tache and dye your hair black, Alan – give the people what they want.
The DA wants you to send tips and evidence of poster interference to report@da.org.za, if that’s your vibe.
Alternatively, if you happen to see any already defaced posters whilst you’re in and around the city, you could send photos to editor@2oceansvibe.com.
Anonymity guaranteed, and if they’re any good, we might just publish them.
We’re all going to be driven up the wall with electioneering ahead of May 8, so we may as well have a little fun.
Thanks, Stevie
