Well, it looks like Rob Packham may have cracked.
He’s had a rough few weeks in court, and during proceedings, Packham’s chief alibi has described how the murder accused coaxed him into lying about his whereabouts on the morning of his wife’s murder.
Then, before court proceedings were postponed yesterday until April 15, the State closed its case. Advocate Craig Webster, leading Packham’s defence, called Warrant Officer Steven Young, a 34-year police veteran stationed at Diep River police station, as a witness.
New24 reports:
[Young] commissioned a statement taken from Keanan Thomas, who was one of the first two witnesses to see Gill’s burning BMW that night after hearing a commotion and running outside his home.
Thomas testified that he saw a white SUV nearby, through the trees.
He said he waved to draw the driver’s attention to check if he had called the police but the Audi drove past.
He said the driver was a clean-shaven man with a cap on and an aggressive look on his face.
At a photo identity parade, he pointed out Packham as the man he had seen. He also pointed out a bespectacled Packham in court as the motorist he had seen.
Webster cross-examined Young on possible discrepancies in Thomas’ statement, but Young refused to concede that there was anything unusual about the way in which the statement was commissioned.
The day’s most bizarre moment came shortly after the April 15 postponement when Packham left the courtroom. He first blew a kiss to his daughters, and then, when he realised the cameras were on him, engaged in some kind of weird hide-and-seek game.
Given that he is on trial for the murder of his wife, Gill Packham, with the details of his affair with a mistress exposed, I’m not sure how he’s so chipper:
Packham will remain in police custody until the trial resumes.
