Mercer’s latest Quality of Living survey has been released, revealing the world’s top cities to live in.

Thankfully, it also gives us a good indication of which cities to avoid.

The annual index compares 231 cities around the world, ranking them in categories such as crime, healthcare, education, recreation, public services and personal freedom.

Vienna has held the top spot on this list and others for a while now as the world’s most liveable city. This, according to the Telegraph, has a lot to do with its “packed cultural calendar, coffee houses and imperial architecture”.

Let’s take a look at the top 10:

As you can see, Vienna beat Zurich in Switzerland to claim the top spot in the survey, which saw Auckland, Munich and Vancouver tied in third.

At the other end of the table was the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, which, despite significant advances in security and healthcare, remained rock bottom, lagging behind Bangui in the Central African Republic and Sana’a in war-torn Yemen.

That’s Baghdad and Bangui scratched off the bucket list.

For the first time this year, Mercer included a category for personal safety. Luxembourg, Basel and Bern ranked first for personal safety this year, followed by Helsinki and Zurich which took joint second.

The world’s most dangerous city is Damascus in Syria – currently a warzone.
