The Hallmark channel has dedicated an entire genre of film to stories about women who accidentally meet royalty, or minor royalty, and then fall madly in love with them.
It’s no surprise, then, that the Tatler‘s list of the world’s six most eligible bachelors contains some blue blood.
What is surprising is that one of them grew up in South Africa and is closely related to Prince Harry – more on him later.
For now, let’s do a quick stocktake of the other five.
Bachelor #1: Prince Mateen of Brunei (27)
The Prince is one of five sons and seven daughters born to Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. He likes sport and taking his shirt off for selfies.
He’s also pretty smart, and studied international politics at King’s College, before completing a masters at the School of African and Oriental Studies.
Bachelor #2: Prince Nikolai of Denmark, 19
Prince Nikolai’s grandma is Queen Margrethe II and the Earl of Wessex is his godfather. He’s a model, has signed to Denmark’s Scoop Models, and walked for Burberry during London Fashion Week in February 2018.
He also opened Kim Jones’ first Dior show last June.
Bachelor #3: The Marquess of Worcester (30)
Henry is the grandson of the Duke of Beaufort and the son of his heir, the Earl of Worcester. He’s also known as the Earl of Glamorgan, or just Robert Somerset.
He currently works as a hedge funder, but he doesn’t really have to because he’ll inherit up to ₤200 million of property and investments, including Badminton Estate.
Bachelor #4: The Marquess of Granby (19)
Charles Manners is the younger brother of Ladies Violet, Alice and Eliza Manners, and is currently studying Business Management at Newcastle University. He’s the heir to his father, the Duke of Rutland’s title, as well as the family seat, Belvoir Castle, in Leicestershire.
Bachelor #5: Prince Constantine Alexios of Greece (20)
Constantine is the eldest son of Pavlos, the Crown Prince of Greece and his wife, Marie Chantal. He goes by the nickname ‘Tino”. He’s currently living in the States where he’s studying at Georgetown.
And now, the bachelor you’ve all been waiting for…
No, it’s not Lee Thompson from South Africa’s version of The Bachelor – stop it.
Bachelor #6: Viscount Althorp (24)
Louis grew up in Cape Town and is currently studying at Edinburgh University. Here’s The Cut with the finer deets:
First off, who is this guy? Louis Spencer, 24, is the first cousin of Prince Harry and Prince William. He is the son of Princess Diana’s brother, Charles, 9th Earl Spencer. You likely remember this Charles (who is not the same as Prince Charles) as the person who delivered the eulogy at the late princess’s funeral.
Louis’s title is the Viscount Althorp. And to clarify, Louis is not the same guy as Prince Harry and Prince William’s other hot cousin, Arthur Chatto — you know, the one who loves to pose for mirror selfies in his underwear. Arthur is a relative on their dad’s side.
So … what is a viscount? I’m so glad you asked. According to the dictionary, a viscount is a British “ranking below an earl and above a baron.” The title is always inherited from an ancestor or appointed by a monarch.
Thankfully, the experts at Deberett’s London have a handy ranking guide to help us understand: Basically, ranked from highest to lowest, the titles for men are: duke, marquess, earl, viscount, and baron. For women, the titles are: duchess, marchioness, countess, viscountess, and baroness. Prince Harry and Prince William have both been given the title of “duke,” while Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle both have the title of “duchess.”
Point is, I’m sure, that he’s royalty with a bit of South African flavour.
