In March last year, traffic came to a stop on the corner of Maxwell Drive and the R55 in Johannesburg, when police arrested suspected members of the Rolex Gang following a high-speed chase.
Then, just a few months later, CCTV footage showed a group of men robbing people of their watches and jewellery on the Jozi streets, leading to the suspicion that the gang was back.
Now it seems certain that the Rolex Gang are back again, reports TimesLIVE.
It took less than a minute for the so-called “Rolex gang” to steal a watch off the wrist of a German man at a Johannesburg petrol station — and this in broad daylight in full view of other motorists and petrol attendants.
The ordeal began when Jorben Bumann and his wife went shopping at Sandton City and were followed by a silver SUV last Wednesday.
When the couple stopped to fill up with petrol, it all happened so quickly:
The skill and speed of the theft are terrifying.
Equally as terrifying has been what has happened since the crime took place:
Klaus [Bumann’s father] said his son, who has since returned to Germany, was hit in the face and was left bleeding. The men also fled with the cars keys, leaving them stranded for hours.
Klaus told TimesLIVE he was outraged and disappointed by the manner in which police handled the incident.
He recalled how the police were called to the scene, but only arrived later and did not open a case.
“A few days after the incident, we went to check up on the progress of the case and to our surprise were told no case there was no case opened,” he said.
Klaus said he made several attempts to share video footage from the station to serve as evidence to help with the investigation, but with no luck. “The officer said they would go to the garage and get it themselves,” he said.
According to Honeydew police spokesperson, Balan Muthan, the only case that has been opened is for a charge of pointing a firearm.
Sigh.
