I wish we were able to write about feelgood stories and businesses booming and silly viral videos all day (we sneak a few in), but we live in South Africa, and unfortunately that means much of the news that comes our way isn’t rainbows and unicorns.
Take for example the Global Citizen Festival on Sunday night. Beyoncé fans rejoiced as their queen performed at the FNB Stadium, and those watching from home were treated to 25 minutes of Bee and Jay-Z before the live feed was cut.
Those watching from home then went to bed, but those leaving the stadium were subject to the kind of thing that leaves us sick to the stomach.
We covered some of those harrowing accounts yesterday, and now footage has emerged of the chaos that went down at the Sasol garage where concertgoers gathered.
TimesLIVE say they are “in possession of several clips which show hundreds of people fleeing for safety at the Sasol Ormonde garage. The crime spree lasted more than five hours.”
Dozens of people have come forward to detail their experiences after the festival, explaining how they were mugged at gunpoint, heard shots being fired and were attacked at the garage.
Police have consistently said they had a strong presence at the venue. In a statement to TimesLIVE, national police spokesperson Vish Naidoo said police did not leave their posts until hours after the show ended.
Witnesses and the CEO of Stadium Management have disputed this, claiming that no police officers were visible after the last performance.
In this video, a single police van enters the garage a full two hours after the violent crime first erupted:
Again, if you read the accounts of those who were present, that footage above barely scrapes the surface of what was a shameful ending to a night that was meant to be about taking this country forward.
At times, it feels like it’s lawless out there.
