OK, now for something a little lighter.

In the land of Trump and fascism it’s nice to see that acts of kindness can still happen, like the man who tracked down the couple in this accidental, but perfect, engagement shot.

In keeping with the engagement theme, it’s quite common for people to propose in New York’s Times Square. When police witnessed this particular proposal, however, they had to intervene.

Security footage showed a man getting down on one knee over a grate in the square. If you’re thinking that he looks panicked, that’s because the ring had dropped into a subway grate and he couldn’t get it out, reports Mashable.

The police sent in special ops officers to retrieve the ring and posted the following on Twitter:

The best part is that it worked. Daniella Anthony and John Drennan are soon to be reunited with their precious piece of jewellery, according to the BBC:

“We are so happy, we can’t believe it,” the young couple said after discovering their lost engagement ring had been found.

The pair, from Peterborough, had flown to New York to celebrate their 10-year dating anniversary.

Mr Drennan said he’d put a lot of thought into the proposal.

Speaking to BBC News on Sunday evening, he said he had carried the ring around in his pocket for two days before finding the right moment.

It also turns out that the proposal didn’t actually take place in Times Square, but in Central Park a few hours earlier. The ring was too big for Daniella, and had slipped off her finger in Times Square.

When they arrived home after their holiday, a friend alerted them to the social media campaign by the NYPD.

“We are so thankful to everyone – especially the New York Police Department and everyone who shared our story,” the couple said.

The couple is liaising with the NYPD to have their ring returned.

They get their ring back, and there’s some added spice to their engagement story – a win all around.
