An inmate at a Michigan jail says he’s being subjected to cruel and unusual punishment because he has been banned from having porn.
In a handwritten lawsuit, 21-year-old Kyle Richards says his civil rights have been violated by the Macomb County Jail. Richards says that the jail’s refusal to let him have erotic material subjects him to a “poor standard of living” and “sexual and sensory deprivation”.
The Michigan Department of Corrections tells The Detroit News that some prisons do allow porn, even though it is technically banned. The American Civil Liberties Union says that prisons generally have a lot of leeway on the porn issue.
Richards was charged with bank robbery after police tracked his footprints through the snow all the way to his apartment, where he was stashing the money.
Richards pleaded guilty and will be sentenced on August the second. I hope he wins his porno rights. Surely this, of all things, should be covered in the US constitution.
