Since the dams started filling up and Day Zero was moved all the way to 2022, Capetonians have been celebrating the start of summer sans water crisis.
The drought and the subsequent scare forced us to work together to save as much water as possible, and we were relatively successful.
As tempted as some might be to go back to five-minute showers and ditching that bucket you’ve been knocking your shins against for the last while, it’s more important than ever to keep up with water-wise living.
We aren’t out of the woods yet.
Let’s roll back the clocks to earlier this year, when Stor-Age launched the #6BFORME campaign alongside the City of Cape Town. This initiative had the simple, yet effective goal to aid the water crisis and raise awareness about the allocated 50 litres of water per day.
Here’s former Bok captain Jean de Villiers expressing his support for the initiative:
All Stor-Age stores nationwide were set up as water collection points. South Africans were then urged to make use of their conveniently located drop off points to donate store-bought, drinkable sealed water. Stor-Age then worked with the City of Cape Town to ensure the donated water safely reached the City depot.
At the end of April, 10 000 litres of safe, drinkable water arrived in Cape Town to be distributed to those most in need. These incredible donations were received at Stor-Age stores across the country, with the most support coming from the Gauteng region. The water was then offloaded at the city depot for safe storage and distribution.
Now that dam levels have risen, and the city has switched to Level 5 restrictions at 70 litres per day per person, Capetonians have increased their water consumption once again.
In the spirit of #6BFORME, Stor-Age is encouraging everyone to rethink their water consumption ahead of the inevitable lack of summer rain.
Every water-saving effort that is made can make a difference. These are a few water-saving techniques can be incorporated in both the workplace and at home:
We are all in this together, and Stor-Age constantly strives to better the lives of their customers and the communities that they serve.
