South Africans may never get to see the likes of Lewis Hamilton tearing through the streets of Cape Town during a Formula One race (for a while, there were hopes), but petrolheads have still have reason to celebrate.
We’re talking about last November, when the World Rallycross of South Africa (WRX) took place at the Killarney International Raceway. The event was the first time that Rallycross and its World Championship event was hosted in Africa, was the first FIA-sanctioned World Championship since the last South African Grand Prix in 1993, and was also a massive success.
The huge crowds that gathered were treated to a thrilling spectator experience, receiving huge accolades from the international drivers and a large amount of media coverage.
In the Supercar final there was plenty of drama, with Swedish speedster Johan Kristoffersson taking top spot:
Off the track, the bumper weekend also offered aerobatic displays by the South African Air Force’s Silver Falcons, expos, fan zones, food, drinks and plenty of merchandise on sale.
Why are we taking this trip down memory lane? Because the Gumtree World Rallycross of South Africa returns to the Killarney Raceway on November 24 and 25, bringing with it the raw power, intense excitement, and superior speed that made the inaugural event so incredibly successful.
World Rallycross is the fastest growing branch of motorsport in the world, and now the Mother City is a part of the excitement once more. Get that date down in the calendar right now, round up the entire family (kids under 12 get in for free), and prepare to be exhilarated.
This year, 25 world-renowned drivers go head to head over two days for the World Championship title. High profile drivers are equipped with RX Supercars with over 600bhp, and the ability to accelerate from 0-60mph in less than two seconds, which is faster than a Formula One car.
Tickets are now on sale with the following pricing structure:
There are a number of levels of competition – each with different specifications and power units – from Crosskarts to Super 1600 to RX2 to Supercars.
Basically, there’s a little something for everyone, with a succession of short, sharp, action-packed races with phenomenally quick, powerful cars ensuring there’s never a dull moment.
You can find all of the event details on the WRX SA site, so be sure to snap up a ticket before you’re left eating dust.
