Political maverick John McCain was remembered by friends and family at his memorial at Washington National Cathedral on Saturday.
The Republican Senator was a well-known adversary of Donald Trump, who gave the memorial a miss and went golfing – mainky because he wasn’t invited.
McCain had the last laugh, though, taking a few parting shots at the current president of the US in a final letter to America which was read out after he lost his battle with brain cancer last week.
Barack and Michelle Obama, George W. and Barbara Bush, and Bill and Hillary Clinton were at the memorial to pay their respects.
TIME reports on a sweet moment shared between Bush and Michelle Obama.
Bush was seen grabbing a mint from his wife, former First Lady Laura Bush, and then passing it to Michelle Obama who mouths “thank you” with a smile.
…Bush and Michelle Obama share an unlikely friendship that many were happy to see make a resurgence at McCain’s funeral.
Former presidents Bush and Obama – both of whom beat McCain in presidential elections – were asked to give eulogies at his funeral. You can see Obama’s moving eulogy here:
Continuing in the no holds barred tradition of her dad, McCain’s daughter honoured her father by calling out Trump and Trump’s America:
