A good heist film has everything you want out of an action flick – smart, likeable anti-heroes and the suspense of seeing a cunning plan in action.
Back in April 2015, life imitated art when after some serious planning and mad skills, thieves pulled off an epic heist at the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company in London.
The crime shared a lot of the characteristics of a Hollywood heist film, including disguises, careful planning and a ton of jewels craftily liberated from a vault.
The heist was planned and carried out by four elderly men who were experienced thieves, all of whom pleaded guilty and received prison sentences in March 2016.
The Hutton Garden Heist is the inspiration for King of Thieves, starring Sir Michael Caine, Michael Gambon, Charlie Cox, Ray Winstone, Jim Broadbent, Paul Whitehouse and Tom Courtenay – a royal court of British actors.
The Independent reports that Sir Michael’s character:
…leads the unlikely elderly gang of London robbers involved in the heist in the film, based on what is often described as the biggest and most daring burglary in British history.
…The trailer for King Of Thieves, directed by The Theory Of Everything’s James Marsh, also shows the relationships of the men starting to crumble dramatically amid their plot to steal from a safe deposit facility in London’s jewellery district.
The film is based on the elderly gang of thieves, which included John “Kenny” Collins, Daniel Jones, Terry Perkins and Brian Reader, who were mostly in their sixties or seventies at the time of the heist.
Earlier this year, a minimum value of £13.69 million was placed on valuables stolen in the raid.
There are two trailers, one that was cleaned up for sensitive audiences, and one that showcases the hilarity of foul-mouthed elderly gentlemen:
The humorous newly released trailer sees Sir Michael, 85, use “f******” and “f*** off” three times, while Sir Tom drops the word twice.
Another of the stars cries “oh f***” in a group situation, which sees Whitehouse’s character’s crotch accidentally blasted with oil.
An alternative version of the trailer without swearing has also been released.
Obviously, we have the filthy one for you here. Enjoy.
King Of Thieves will be in cinemas on September 14.
