If Team Fortress 2, Overwatch and The Walking Dead had a threesome, then Fortnite would be their baby.
A billion dollar baby, to be precise.
This hugely popular, battle royale-type video game, which has only been around for less than a year, has raked in a cool $1 billion in revenue through in-game purchases alone.
That’s R13 billion on our shores, and that’s a fan-flippin’-tastic figure for a game that doesn’t cost us plebs a single cent to buy.
A report by Fortune has more info:
[According to gaming intelligence company SuperData] The in-game purchases offer no competitive advantages to buyers. Players can spend money to earn V-bucks within the game, which can be spent on outfits, or “skins,” accessories, and dance movies for their avatars. Players can also purchase the V-bucks directly, at a rate of 1 000 V-bucks for $9,99 [R132].
Not only has Fortnite pulled in top dollar, but it’s also scored other sweet accolades to tuck under its belt:
Fortnite: Battle Royale was released as a mode of the original Fortnite game, a zombie survival game costing $60 [R791]. It is currently the most-streamed and most-watched game on Twitch.
Wowzers. Take that, God of War.
