You could do a lot with R90 000, especially if you’re in the political field.
I mean, that amount can go a long way towards helping the people in your municipalities, for a start.
You know, stuff like proper housing, improving transport, and installing toilets minus the luxury of a ribbon-cutting ceremony … spending funds on those things makes all the difference.
Or, if you’re just not bothered at all, why not just splurge it all at KFC?
If only this was a joke, but sadly there are fools in our midst. Per a report by Times LIVE, the municipal manager of a cash-strapped, issue-ridden municipality in the Eastern Cape has managed to spend R90 000 on fried chicken after his appointment:
Carte Blanche on Sunday lifted the lid on the shocking lack of service delivery by Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality in the town of Komani‚ formerly Queenstown.
The heavily indebted municipality has resorted to selling off its assets‚ such as fire engines and road graders‚ to pay off some of its debts. Komani is littered with rubbish and its roads are full of potholes.
Records revealed that municipal manager Chris Magwangqana spent R90 000 on “catering” – listed as KFC.
Um, excuse me?
I like fried chicken as much as the next person, but R90 000 is way too extravagant for hundreds of Streetwise Twos.
Try telling that to Magwangqana, though – take a look at the numbers, as posted by Twitter user @Chwayitisa:
Eish. That’s a whole lotta chicken.
Carte Blanche presenter Derek Watts confronted Magwangqana about this outrageous expense and the state of the town:
How much fried chicken does one municipality need? #CarteBlanche pic.twitter.com/hnG91dMb3R

As y’all can see, no shits were given on Magwangqana’s part.
The alarming thing is that this dude has been in trouble for mismanaging funds before. Per The Citizen:
Magwangqana is the same man who was embroiled in a R631 million toilet scandal in Amatole in 2015, where 66 000 toilets were meant to be built but either weren’t or were built so badly that none of them was usable.
An audit report reportedly recommended criminal and disciplinary action be brought against Magwangqana; the Hawks are understood to still be investigating.
Part Two of this tragedy? He’s not the only one who’s been dipping into funds:
The same cash-strapped municipality’s mayor, Nokuzola Tolashe, justified spending R300 000 on a PR exercise to talk to the community because she said it would be important to explain to them what good work their local government was doing.
It turned out she was also the beneficiary of a hired Volvo SUV at a cost of R78 000 a month because the mayoral car was “in for repairs”. It had been in for repairs for at least the past six months, it emerged.
She rated her performance as mayor as eight out of 10 when asked to score herself.
She also featured on Carte Blanche:

Smell that? That’s the strong scent of bullshit.
Meanwhile, unhappy Tweeps were not having this:
Too bad Magwangqana and Toloshe are too busy chomping on chicken to deal with the needs of their municipality.
If they continue on like this, that municipality is finger lickin’ doomed.
