If we learnt anything from that fake money fiasco over in Moscow, it’s that people might not know the difference between real cash and Monopoly money.
Some people might find that’s the case with the Mandela banknotes.
The commemorative series of banknotes entered circulation a few years back and have since become widespread, more so than the original Big Five notes.
Now that another Mandela commemorative series of banknotes, and a new R5 coin, have been released, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) launched a public awareness campaign to combat the ‘real vs fake’ issue, reports BusinessTech:
As part of the campaign, the SARB released a series of videos to highlight what makes the notes and coin special, as well as a number of security features implemented in the notes.
Dubbed ‘check-check’, the SARB said it was important to check that your commemorative banknotes are real when using them for transactions.
It’s recommended that you watch these videos if you prefer carrying out transactions with cash money:
There you go, folks. Here’s hoping your wallet isn’t lined with fakes, and someone hasn’t taken you for a ride.
