If you do your chores as a kid, you’ll grow up to become a billionaire – well, that’s apparently the secret to Justin Kan and his brother Daniel’s success.
Hey, don’t scoff. I know the last thing anyone wants to do is household chores in their spare time, but it’s apparently worked out for these entrepreneurial siblings.
After all, they each founded companies in their 20s and then sold the startups for around $1 billion [R13,6 billion] apiece.
Are you listening now? Great.
Business Insider has the scoop:
Justin launched the startup formerly known as justin.tv, now known as Twitch, while he was studying physics and psychology at Yale. His brother, Daniel, joined up with Twitch co-founder Kyle Vogt to make self-driving cars a reality at Cruise Automation.
Video-streaming site Twitch sold to Amazon for $970 million [over R13 billion] in cash in 2014, while General Motors bought Cruise for over $1 billion [R13,6 billion] in cash and stock in 2016.
Wow, talk about becoming instant billionaires, just like those three clever chaps who sold their company to Microsoft last month.
Per the report, Justin revealed that he and Daniel owe their work ethic to their mommy dearest, who he described as a “tiger mom”:
[Our mother] didn’t actually assign them [chores] to individuals. She just said, ‘Here is the list of things that need to get done, you guys need to collectively do the set of things on this list, and nobody gets to play video games until you execute these things.’
We thought that was very unfair, but of course the important thing is what that taught us. It changed us from thinking of ourselves and our individual responsibilities, to thinking of ourselves as a team.
Justin and Daniel then applied their mother’s leadership style to how they ran their startups, minus any mops and buckets, brooms and dishes:
[At] any startup, it’s like we are all in this boat together, sink or swim, and it doesn’t matter who does it or who gets credit. We just need to get these specific things done so we can be successful, and if we’re successful, everyone is going to win.
Look at them now – they’re flipping rich and living the dream.
Thanks, Mom!
Now get out there and do your chores.
