We all have our lapses of judgment. But some of us make such horrendously poor decisions that one simply has to ask, “What were they on?”. Every week we bring you three contenders in what can only be described as a battle of small wits. So, with great pleasure we present this week’s three La Fee Absinthe-Minded Moment of the Week finalists. Inside we have Anthony Weiner, Locnville, and the Jimmy Manyi. But who claims the prize for the most mindbogglingly foolish tomfoolery of the week? Click through to find out!
Third Place – Jimmy Manyi
Government spokesman Jimmy Manyi announced this week that the media is failing to communicate government activity, and suggested it would favour those that did by passing advertising on to them. Simple logic dictates that this sort of statement amounts to a bribe. He was briefing the media on Thursday following the cabinet’s approval of a new communication strategy that would see the government’s advertising budget centralised under the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), of which he is also the head. He said the government would “focus” on media that “pass on our content much more effectively to the public of South Africa”. Media freedom. We haz it.
Second Place – Locnville
Electro pop duo Locnville were reportedly assaulted by police in the early hours on Thursday. Locnville tweeted “Locnville was just assaulted by police officers!!!” in the minutes following the incident. Details that have emerged since then are slightly more murky. An eyewitness report and a partial video paint the group as inebriated, antagonistic youths who attracted the attention of the police with rowdy behaviour. They need a PR intervention, very fast.
The Weiner (Heh) – Anthony Weiner
Mr. Weiner’s troubles began nearly two weeks ago when he tweeted a link to a photograph of his crotch to a female college student in Seattle. He had meant to send it just to her, but accidentally sent it to tens of thousands of his Twitter followers. At first, Mr. Weiner claimed his account had been hacked. On Monday, he held a news conference in which he admitted lying, and said he had engaged in inappropriate online discussions with about a half dozen women over the past three years. What were you thinking, Anthony? You must surely have been drinking absinthe.
