A man who suffered from both Leukaemia and HIV seems to have been cured of HIV, after he received a unique type of bone marrow transplant.

The “Berlin Patient”, Timothy Ray Brown, underwent the procedure in Berlin, Germany in 2007. Reportedly the bone marrow was donated by a man who was immune to HIV, as 1% of the Caucasian population is. And now, four years after the procedure, Brown is free of the disease.

His doctor, Gero Huetter told Reuters:

He has no replicating virus and he isn’t taking any medication. And he will now probably never have any problems with HIV

Although this treatment isn’t an outright cure for aids, it represents a significant step forward to finding a method that is both effective and sustainable.
