Count the clicks, mother truckers.
I’ll just come out and say it – no, it’s not 2oceansvibe, but at least there aren’t any sordid sites cracking the top 10 most visited South African sites for the month of April.
Not that there is anything wrong with that, so you just do you and explore your beautiful body.
Back to the matter at hand, though, and the latest stats according to Effective Measure, the official traffic measurement partner of IAB SA.
Just pipping News24 to top spot is Gumtree, with the online classifieds site attracting a whopping 5,2 million unique South African browsers in April. That puts it ahead of News24 with 5,1 million, and Times LIVE with 4,2 million.
It’s also the only site in the top five which is not a news-related website, so that takes some doing. I guess everyone has their own side-hustle going on.
The full top 10 list shows just how far ahead they are in terms of page views, too:
I had never even heard of Vodacom V Live until now, and just assumed it was disgruntled customers going to lay a complaint.
Claire Cobbledick, Gumtree SA’s Head of Core Business, believes the website’s growth is part of a continuing trend of improving internet participation, as South Africans take their financial matters into their own hands:
“More and more South Africans are buying and selling on Gumtree either as a side hustle or as a way of building businesses – and as more South Africans see results and cheaper access to data, these numbers will only increase”.
True that, although our cellular providers have a lot to answer for in terms of data costs.
I guess the good news is that South Africans are looking to Gumtree as a way of supplementing their income, and as their app makes it easier and more time-efficient to manage, it’s creating an entirely new market.
Best of luck to the side-hustlers, and we respect your game.
