It’s safe to say that it’s been stressful watching Seth try to obtain a liquor license for Cafe du Cap, the fabled brekkie and lunch spot that serves the best Croque Monsieurs in Cape Town.
Feel free to swing past 113 Loop Street to put them to the test, but we’re more concerned with what libations are available to wash it all down.
Thankfully, after much back and forth and the potential sighting of a grey hair on Seth’s head (rumours, as yet unconfirmed), that box is now ticked.
Yes, tell your friends, because Cafe du Cap is now rocking a liquor license. Hallejullah, my dudes.
These doors are beckoning, and there will now be booze inside:
With great power comes great responsibility, though, and one must select beverages that compliment the cafe’s general vibe.
It’s the kind of vibe where some sultry jazz mixes in with the likes of Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Edith Piaf, Groove Armada and the Rolling Stones, so we’re looking for something with class, but a healthy dose of a good time on the side.
To put it simply, the vibe is swanky AF, with the latest issues of FT Weekend, Monocle, Architectural Digest and Conde Nast Traveler available for you to indulge in some quality journalism.
You haven’t lived until you’ve had the pulled pork from the gourmet hot lunch table, or Plat du Jour if you want to impress people.
Here’s an example of said Plat du Jour from when 9Lives paid a visit:
Right, what are you drinking at this point? If you want to stock craft beer, with a name like ‘The Grizzly Hyena’ or some odd variant thereof, you’ll generally start ticking towards the R50 a pop marker.
We joke, because many crafties (you know you’ve heard the term before) are far more expensive than that, and there’s something tragic about coming to the realisation that a lion (a R50 note, consider yourself schooled) can’t get you a cold one these days.
After pondering this point at great length, and indulging in some taste testing (it was a labour of love), the decision was unanimous.
Enter Sol Beer, the exclusive beer of Cafe du Cap, and the only authentic Mexican cerveza. Embracing the spirit of freedom, which aligns very nicely with our motto to always ‘live the holiday’, they’re all about the espiritu libre.
Cafe du Cap can’t give them away for free, but for R30 a pop, or R100 for a civilised bucket of four, there’s no excuse not to live a little over lunch.
Um, put the beer in a bucket you hooligan.
Here’s the real kicker – every Thursday and Friday, between 2PM and 4PM, there’s a 2-for-1 beer special. Buy one Sol for R30 and voila, there’s a second in front of you mahala.
Free of charge. Nada. Niks. You’re winning at life now.
Happy hours are best served back to back, so this one will run for two hours.
It would be remiss of us not to mention that the fridge is set to four degrees, so the beer comes out at the perfect temperature.
This beer isn’t yet in the fridge, but you can bet it will be when the time is right. We see you…
At those prices, you can even bring along a few amigos to share in the fun. Well done, you’ve done your good deed for the day. We’re all living the holiday.
Pop past, grab some chow from the hot plate, and wash it down with a little sunshine in a bottle.
Congratulations on becoming a better, swankier, human being.
