Woe is me, say the men who are having so much sex off the back of Tinder that they feel like prostitutes.
Now this one comes via the Telegraph, who have been looking into the rise of porn addiction in the UK.
There are all sorts of stats about the rise in numbers of teenagers watching porn, with research centred on how this often correlates to unsafe sex practices amongst those same teens.
You came here for the Tinder prostitute stuff though, so let’s just get right into that:
In November, when I co-authored the Harry’s Masculinity Report, we discovered, to our surprise, that young, single men were the least content of all. Londoners – the apparent epicentre of porn addiction, fared the worst.
I interviewed a group of these men and a recurring beef was that modern Tinder-style dating was “toxic”: expensive, exhausting and unfulfilling. The men were being treated as sex objects; one said it left him “feeling like a prostitute”.
Simeone, 25, a salesman who’d bedded over 200 Tinder dates, moaned, “Getting sex is too easy. You get bored of it. Tinder takes all the pleasure out of flirting. It’s not fun anymore. Tinder is literally two glasses of wine then back home for sex. There is no emotion. It is boring, empty and lonely”
Please bust out the world’s smallest violin for dear Simeone, who is really going through a lot right now.
R100 says he has his shirt off in one picture, and is holding a small French bulldog in another.
Crazy idea, but bear with me for a second – how about going on a date, and then not having sex with the woman afterwards?
But wait, there’s more:
While, on the surface, Simeone’s might sound like a First World problem that men would like to have, it was echoed by the others, many of whom were spending their entire salaries on rent, dates and image maintenance, such as cars, clothes and gyms, to find a Mrs Right. At the same time, they were increasingly concluding that Mrs Right may not exist in the first place.
You’re right, blowing your income on cars, clothes and gyms does sound like a First World problem.
In the face of such pressures – financial and societal – are today’s men turning to porn for their kicks? It’s certainly quicker, and, in one sense, less risky. But porn can get us hooked on its easy-to-access dopamine release; and porn addiction is hardly an aspirational life goal
Will today’s generation look back and conclude that technology, while meant to improve our lives, has instead meant that we are now lonelier than ever? And while it’s never been easier to achieve instant gratification, it’s never been harder to fall in love?
I’ll be lighting a candle for Simeone tonight, and keeping him in my thoughts and prayers.
Also, how can you be lonely when your latest gym selfie racked up 65 likes on Instagram?
