I’m not that into putting much personal information on Facebook, relationship status included.
The only reason the information is there is because my dearest darling boyfriend thought, after six months, that it was time. Fair enough, I shrugged, as I watched a flood of unsolicited notifications.
But for those of you who are into the whole ‘let-me-share-everything-with-everyone vibe’ (we get it, your baby is cute), you should know a few things before you move too fast and put yourself into a Facebook-accredited relationship.
As part of Facebook’s latest campaign to improve user’s experience on the site, Facebook is updating the “in a relationship” feature – and it rolls out today, reports Vanity Fair:
Beginning on Valentine’s Day, when two users declare they’re in a relationship on Facebook, Facebook’s Messenger tool will open with a cascade of hearts before inviting the couple to assign each other nicknames, and customize [sic] text colors and emojis for their significant other.
Your custom emoji for your partner will be the heart-eyed emoji, and your significant other will appear at the top of your contact list.
Gross.
The update comes as Mark Zuckerberg tries his damnedest to emphasise “meaningful [social] interactions” over “passive content”.
Part of a pledge he made in his New Year’s resolution post, Zuck is hoping that these types of interactions will facilitate a positive experience on Facebook, as the platform works to clamp down on fake news and misinformation.
Because no one pretends to be in a relationship.
