There’s nothing quite like the soft, soothing tones of Sir David Attenborough narrating the wonders of the natural world.
Because I respect you as a person I will assume you have watched Blue Planet II, and if you haven’t, just do better and get on that.
Now around these parts it’s the hadeda ibis that drives us mad with its instantly recognisable call (honourable mention to the Egyptian Goose as well), but across in ‘Stralia it’s the white ibis.
Or bin chicken, if we’re going with the name that went viral earlier this year.
[Does a video from earlier this year qualify as a throwback? I see people on Facebook posting shit from a few weeks ago so bugger it.]
Australia so loves the bin chicken that when it lost the national bird of the year competition earlier this week people went bonkers.
Here’s NewsAU on how the magpie ruined the party:
…the bin chicken looked prepped to take out the top spot right until the final votes were tallied.
A significant number of Australians put their heart and soul into campaigning for the misunderstood ibis, so understandably a lot of people were not pleased with the result.
Some have compared the magpie’s win over the ibis to the great Australian Idol finale of 2003 when Shannon Noll was robbed of the title by Guy Sebastian.
Others have dubbed the unprecedented results as “Australia’s Trump moment” and even suggested that “Russian bots” were to blame.
Bloody magpies.
Anyway much of the country’s love stems from this video, a Planet Earth spoof about how the wondrous creature has adapted to city living.
It’s so on point you might not even know that they’re taking the mickey:
I also welcome our feathered overlords.
In honour of the master himself, here’s David saying boo to a sloth:
Happy Thursday – together we will cling on until the end of the week.
