The latest career index report bases its information on careers listed on job portal sites, and showed a few interesting trends in the hiring/job search activities of South Africans.
Published by Business Tech, sectors including the building & construction, architecture, and manufacturing & assembly saw a significant uptake in jobs in recent months.
Admin, sales, marketing and finance sectors saw a notable decrease in job postings:
Looking at changes in demand over the last 12 months, the ICT, medical & health and business & management sectors took a knock as vacancy volumes decreased significantly year-on-year.
Of the two graphs seen below, the demand graph “provides a good indication of where the majority of employment takes place”, while the supply graph correlates closely to areas in high demand by active job seekers.

Looking at the South African workforce through the Total Workforce Index released by the ManpowerGroup – the go-to international workforce company for businesses and job seekers alike – South Africa ranked “24th out of the total ranking of 75 countries internationally:
It ranked highly for cost efficiency and regulation, but lost points due to poor market maturity and availability of skilled labour.
