Developments this morning indicate that Robert Mugabe won’t go quietly into the night, the 93-year-old despot still clinging to power.
You have to think it’s a matter of days, rather than weeks, before the wolves get their way, but for now Bob refuses to relent.
Here’s the latest (at the time of writing) via the BBC:
Sources close to the talks say Mr Mugabe – who has been in control of Zimbabwe since it threw off white minority rule in 1980 – is refusing to stand down voluntarily before next year’s planned elections.
“I think he is trying to buy time,” one source close to the army leadership told the AFP news agency.
Some observers suggest that Mr Mugabe may be trying to seek guarantees of safety for himself and his family before stepping aside.
One possible out is that South Africa offers Mugabe political asylum, as the EFF have suggested we should, and we know that JZ and Bob have always been birds of a feather.
What’s the great irony, you ask? Quartz reports:
While he may avoid jail, public humiliation, or worse in South Africa, he would be fleeing to a country maintained, in many respects, by the people he drove out. They are South Africa’s nannies, cleaners, and Uber drivers. Its shopkeepers, financiers, secretaries, teachers, and business professionals.
His wife, Grace Mugabe, is wanted in South Africa on charges of assault, which she recently escaped under the cover of diplomatic immunity. What charges might Robert Mugabe face?
Perhaps most ironically, he would arrive the same way thousands of Zimbabweans have before him: as a political asylum seeker, trying to escape the consequences of his 37-year-old rule.
Yup – having driven so many Zimbabweans down south, he may now follow suit and sneak in a backdoor with his tail between his legs.
If you’ve ever hopped in an Uber (and you really should, silly season is coming), chances are you’ve been ferried around by a Zimbabwean. The point? Uncle Bob might find a friend in Zuma and his cronies, but he probably doesn’t want to catch a ride in an Uber.
Can’t him and Jacob just bugger off to Dubai?
