There’s been plenty of information, and misinformation, flying around on social media about what’s happening in Zimbabwe.
You’ve probably had your fair share to wade through, but if you err on the side of caution you’ll be sticking to your tried and trusted sources.
We have covered three major news outlets and their live feeds HERE, which is worth keeping an eye on, but this update below comes via the back alleys.
This was sent to us by a trusted source, compiled after speaking to his many contacts on the ground in Zim, who wishes to remain anonymous for reasons of safety:
So here’s the latest from in country sources, including the ruling party’s banker (I’ve condensed and combined the info):
Zimbabwe is now under military rule with Robert Mugabe (ex-president), Grace Mugabe (ex-first lady), and various other cabinet ministers are under house arrest. The Mugabe family are currently in talks with the military leadership to negotiate an exit plan. A new military leadership council has been set up in Masvingo, all governmental buildings are under heavy guard.
The military will dissolve the government and parliament, suspending the upcoming elections and maintain control of the country. The Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO)will immediately fall under the control of General Chiwenga as acting head of state. The military council is already in discussions with ex VP Joyce Mujuru, ex VP Mnangagwa and Morgan Tsvangirai to form a transitional government.
The army will be doing patrols in all cities to protect the citizens from the police who still remain loyal to Mugabe.
Via Twitter, there’s this photo showing Zimbabwean police being detained outside the courthouse:
We have seen some of that information from our sources relayed in bits and pieces elsewhere, but as a whole it seems like Zim might be headed in the right direction, as long as it can avoid bloodshed and violence.
While you’re here it’s worth checking out the just-released statement from Jacob Zuma, via Times LIVE, who is clearly bleak for his pal Bob:
President Jacob Zuma‚ on behalf of the Southern African Development Community‚ has “noted with great concern” the unfolding political situation in neighbouring Zimbabwe.
Calling for restraint and calm‚ Zuma “expressed hope that developments in Zimbabwe would not lead to unconstitutional changes of Government as that would be contrary to both SADC and African Union positions”.
“The President has urged the Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Defence Force to resolve the political impasse amicably and has urged the Zimbabwean Defence Force to ensure that the maintenance of peace and security in the country is not compromised.”
The statement added: “SADC will continue to closely monitor the situation and remains ready to assist where necessary to resolve the political impasse in keeping with established SADC Protocols and processes.”
Birds of a feather sticking together and all that jazz.
