Just another Sunday at church, right?
This one took place just before midday yesterday, with angry churchgoers overpowering and assaulting a Johannesburg Metro Police Department officer.
His crime? Towing an illegally parked car, which was causing traffic congestion, that belonged to a member of the church on Claim Street in Hillbrow.
Let’s start with the video via News24:
Charming, hey?
A little background on how things became so heated from JMPD spokesperson chief superintendent Wayne Minaar:
“From interim investigations, it is believed that the JMPD officer drew his firearm and fired into the air to stop the rioting congregants from advancing toward them, but the crowd did not heed the warning but proceeded to attack the officer.”
Minaar said the group overpowered and disarmed the officer “who was beaten and left unconscious and had to be rushed to Milpark Hospital”.
One arrest has been made, with the person who handed the officer’s weapon in being detained for “illegally being in possession of a JMPD officer’s firearm”.
I’m not overly familiar with the Holy Book, but aren’t there a few ramblings about the senseless beating of your fellow humans being frowned upon?
