“A sergeant came around from the charge office and walked out of the station. He didn’t say anything, but walked to her passenger window. He shot her upper arm and it looked like the bullet went through her breast and out of her chest.”
This was the statement of Sipho Baloyi, car guard and witness to the fatal shooting outside the Kempton Park Police Station.
A 38 year old sergeant has been arrested for allegedly shooting a woman dead outside the Kempton Park police station.
The incident occurred at approximately 20h30 on Tuesday evening when a woman, now identified as Jeanette Odendaal, 45, sought to park her car. She had crashed into a stationary police vehicle.
The noise of the accident had alerted the sergeant to the incident and he then allegedly went into the street and committed the brutal act.
The officer then reportedly walked back into the police station only to emerge again a few moments later.
Sipho Baloyi had been witness to the event after assisting Jeanette with parking. She had been on her way to the police station to report an incident of disturbance of the peace.
Baloyi said he pleaded with the sergeant to call emergency services but was then met with the officer’s disturbing response:
She’s dying already, there’s no point in calling the ambulance.
He said other police officers flooded the scene shortly thereafter and had demanded to know from the sergeant why he had shot her. The sergeant then allegedly burst into tears.
The Independent Complaints Directorate confirmed on Wednesday that the sergeant had been arrested and that he would appear in court soon.
