Spanish authorities seized a tug boat carrying £200 million (R3,6 billion) worth of cocaine after a tip-off from their British counterparts, with that drug haul weighing in at close to four tonnes.

The tug boat was located between Portugal’s Madeira and Azores islands, with more below from the Mirror:

Officials found 165 individual packages of cocaine weighing 23 kg, a total of 3.7 tonnes, hidden in the boat kitchen.

The Comoros-flagged vessel was towed into the Spanish port of Cadiz.

Spain confirmed they were acting on intelligence from the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA).

The crew, from Turkey and Azerbaijan, were arrested.

The operation was jointly conducted by Spanish cops and the NCA with the help of the Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre-Narcotics (MAOC-N) in Lisbon.

“This represents a major disruption to international crime groups, depriving them of potential revenue running into the hundreds of millions of pounds,” NCA spokesman Mark Blackwell said.
