It’s not exactly breaking news that there are sharks in J-Bay, but given what has happened in years gone by you can’t blame organisers for putting the safety of the surfers first.
Yesterday’s heats were abandoned after a shark, most likely a mako, breached whilst the surfers were in the water.

Not quite a breach, but alarming nonetheless.

A shark breached about 100 yards off the line-up during #CoronaOpenJBay Round 4. This was part of a larger feeding activity that was occurring. Everyone was removed from the water safely. We will not restart the heat today. Competition is off for the day and will potentially resume tomorrow.
Sharks aside, our boy Jordy Smith absolutely crushed it. Two perfect 10 rides – done:
Stop it.
The competition will resume today, so let’s hope the waves are gnarly and the sharks stick to the deep water.
