It seems it’s all the rage to voice ones displeasure with how one finds things are going in court these days. Instead of it being an advocate this time, it’s a 71 year old “Brett Kebble-type character” from the Strand near Cape Town facing fraud charges. He had recently celebrated his 71st in Pollsmoor too.
It’s only fair to say that Andries “Oom Dries” Marais had probably been exposed to the P-Bomb long before his visitation to Pollsmoor where we have it under good authority that the P-Bomb is also a popular word.
Oom Dries is wound up, along with members of his notorious family of con artists from the Strand, in a number of fraudulent transactions dating back years. Supposedly Oom only has a grade 5 education.
He faces 32 charges, amongst others, for stolen railway tracks to the value of hundreds of thousands of rands in Petrusburg, a case in Stellenbosch where he sold metal tracks for scrap metal not owned by him for R800 000 and numerous fraudulent property transactions.
According to News24:
Marais’s son, Reginald, 45, who is apparently “always by his father’s side” and his daughter, Karin Joubert, 47, a Stellenbosch businesswoman, appeared with their father in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court. Both children got bail.
Bizarre scenes were seen in the court on Friday and Monday, with Marais snr, who when the court was adjourned, clearly whispered the words “jou ma se poes” to the investigating officer, Anthea Snyder.
What a lovely way to express your feelings that, just P-Bombing the investigating officer. I’m sure she took that well, Oom.
Apparently his lawyer also told the son after court adjourned on Friday:
Jeez, Regi, I almost jumped over the court benches to hit the old man over the head with those answers he gave.
Reg also managed to write off a golden Mercedes-Benz CL600 a few years ago.
What a charming family.
