We’re all trying to make the most of that money in the bank, especially towards the end of the month when payday seems like it’s never going to come around.

So where exactly are you getting the most bang for your buck? Given that SA has officially entered a recession, maybe you’re looking to pinch a penny here and there, and BusinessTech decided to lend a hand with the decision-making process.

For our basket, we look at some essential and non-essential food products. The basket contains 12 items, with store-brands priced for each item where available. The table below shows the pricing:

It’s not exactly a surprise to see Woolies topping the list, but Checkers is really crushing the competition:

The products with the largest increase over the past few years are sugar and maize, thanks in large part to the droughts across much of the country.

In terms of changes from a similar test in 2015 through to this year, it’s Pick n Pay who have seen the most marked increase in prices:

I don’t think we’re going to see the Constantia moms cheating on their dear Woolies any time soon, but for those feeling the pinch there’s some serious food for thought.
