Taking the decision to launch a missile strike on Syria isn’t one any American president takes lightly, and it’s clear the latest nerve gas attack over that side of the world really struck a chord with Donald Trump.
It’s impossible to hear the story of the Syrian man who lost his twins (HERE), as well as a host of other family members, without wondering what is wrong with humanity.
With all the footage doing the rounds, many Americans (and people around the world) were in favour of the show of military force.
Having launched the 59 Tomahawk missiles, Trump was then tasked with telling Chinese President Xi Jinping, with whom he was dining at the time.
What about this chocolate cake talk? Hey, it’s obviously very important to Trump:
Who hasn’t launched a missile attack on a country, mused over how good the cake was, and then forgotten which country it was?
Newsweek with more on Xi Jinping’s reaction, according to Donald:
Trump said he needed to tell Xi of the attack as they were dining because Xi was about to go home after “a full day in Palm Beach,” and Trump didn’t want him to learn the news when he got back to China. Understandable.
“He paused for 10 seconds,” Trump said in describing Xi’s reaction. “Then he asked the interpreter to please say it again. I didn’t think that was a good sign. He said to me, ‘Anybody that uses gases to do that to young children and babies, it’s OK. He was OK with it. He was OK.'”
It’s not Xi’s call to make, but at least the chocolate cake was there to make it OK.
A summary of Trump’s vibe about their meeting:
“We made tremendous progress in our relationship with China,” Trump said after Xi left. “The relationship developed by President Xi and myself I think is outstanding. We look forward to meeting together many times in the future.”
I wonder if he will be saying the same behind closed doors back in Beijing.
