A mere block away from The Address Downtown Dubai, the desert city’s 63-storey super hotel and residential tower that caught fire on New Year’s Eve 2015, another building went up in flames on Sunday.
As black smoke covered the city – much like what happened in Durban a few weeks back – the metropolis looked almost apocalyptic as dark clouds rose from a ” high-rise tower complex being built alongside Dubai’s biggest mall,” reports Mashable.
While three workers were rescued from inside the building, no one was injured.

According to Mashable, these dramatic skyscraper blazes are a growing problem in Dubai and other “rapidly developing parts of the United Arab Emirates”. This is because most of them “have been fuelled by paneling on the sides of many buildings” which, instead of being made with fire-resistant material, has been replaced with the use of “quick-burning tiles, without any breaks to stop or slow a fire.”
A video I took of the fire this morning in downtown dubai. No reports of casualties so far thankfully. #dubai #dubaifire pic.twitter.com/A6pOt1VwVh
