It seems the ANC are trying to use various tactics to instill civil unrest in South Africa.
Whether it’s at the top, like the situation below, or at a grassroots level, mass disruption appears to be the name of their game – and it has increased drastically since the ANC lost control of more metros after this year’s local election.
Yesterday, according to the DA, the ANC coordinated an attack at council meetings in Nelson Mandela Bay, Joburg, and Tshwane using various forms of disruption.
I mean, sure, the EFF can be disruptive, but they have never done something like this:
According to Mmusi:
The pictures were taken in Nelson Mandela Bay’s council meeting, where ANC councillors used glass jugs to physically assault others, smashing them into councillors’ faces and leaving two hospitalised.
The fight in PE, according to Times Live, began like this:
[Mayor Athol] Trollip said the fight stemmed from an item on the agenda about the conduct of an ANC councillor at a recent IDP meeting in New Brighton. Two ANC councillors were apparently asked to leave the chamber after they refused to calm down.
“ANC councillors Makhi Feni and Andile Lungisa approached the speaker’s bench‚ which is sacrosanct with the view‚ in my opinion‚ to assault the speaker‚” he said.
“DA councillor Rano Kayser is in hospital. One councillor from ANC‚ Rosie Daaminds collapsed. I did see blood on her face‚” Trollip said.
“There are glass shards everywhere. That behaviour cannot be expected in a constitutional democracy. The fact that we can’t have glasses and glass jugs in council is an indictment on us.”
Trollip rubbished reports that the shots had been fired by chief whip Werner Senekal.
“We do not bring firearms to council. One ANC councillor was seen carrying a knife‚” he said.
“Senekal was stabbed in the back with a sharp object [a pen]. We will have to step up security unfortunately.”
Can you even.
In other provinces, it was pretty much the same.
Tswhane was hit when ANC members barricaded and then shattered the glass door at the entrance of the Council Chambers, eventually dispersed by the metro police with pepper spray.
Check out footage of the scene HERE.
So what started it in Tshwane? According to IOL:
The ordinary sitting of the council degenerated into chaos again when ANC councillors threatened to physically remove the two officials.
ANC caucus leader Mapiti Matsena complained to council Speaker Rachel Mathebe about Tiyiselani Babane’s appointment as strategic executive head. He said the post was not advertised. Matsena used to occupy the same position under the ANC leadership of former mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa, while Babane was a councillor for Cope.
The ANC regional number two also criticised the appointment of former DA chief whip Marietha Aucamp as chief of staff, saying the law didn’t provide for that position in the municipality. He also questioned the appointment of Gert Pretorius, the new chair of chairs in the council.
Matsena said the appointment was illegal because Pretorius was not a chair of any committee and thus did not qualify to be a chair of chairs. Matsena then vowed the meeting would not continue unless Babane and Aucamp left the council chamber. In support of their leader’s statement, ANC councillors kept on shouting: “Advertise the post. DA is corrupt.”
In Johannesburg, according to Chairperson of the DA’s federal executive James Selfe speaking to Times Live, thing were a little less violent:
…The ANC caucus disrupted council for long periods‚ staged walkouts‚ returned and continued to disrupt the business of council. It is clear that in Johannesburg the caucus of Cllr Parks Tau is nothing more than a band of thugs and hooligans‚ who have no concern for the people of Johannesburg whom council must serve.
