Ask even a casual sports observer who had the worst Rio Olympics and you’re likely to hear the name Ryan Lochte, the U.S. swimmer caught up in the middle of that faux robbery at a petrol station (HERE).
In the wake of the scandal sponsors dropped him, talk show hosts mocked him (HERE and HERE), and now it appears friends turned their backs on him.
That includes the most decorated Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps, with this from the Daily Mail:
The Olympian had reached out to Phelps – with whom he’s had a fierce but friendly rivalry with for more than a decade – for support but says he was disappointed when the 28-time Olympic medal winner failed to call.
‘I think he texted me back saying, ‘Yeah, sure. I’m here to help,’ or something like that,’ Lochte [said]. ‘But he didn’t call me. I was like, ‘Hey, can you please call me? Let me know, I need help.’ That never really happened.’
That’s because you were embroiled in the midst of a scandal, Ryan – no one wants to dirty their paws by reaching out.
So who’s the shoulder he now cries on? Only the whitest man in the rap game, Vanilla Ice, who is also starring on this season’s Dancing with the Stars:
Vanilla Ice [said] that he calmed Lochte by telling him at the outset of the reality competition, ‘Yesterday’s history and tomorrow’s a mystery.’
Lochte says the rapper encouraged him to stay on the show after two men rushed the stage to protest the swimmer for lying about a drunken encounter during the Rio Olympics.
‘I know all the words to ‘Ice, Ice Baby,’ Lochte said, referring to the hit song Vanilla Ice released when in 1991. ‘It’s been awesome. He’s so nice and everything.’
Bromance alert.
Good luck on Dancing with the Stars, Ryan – break a leg.
