The Paralympics Opening Ceremony took place last night in Rio, or this morning if you call SA home.

One of the more pivotal moments comes when the torch is carried into the stadium, an honour bestowed upon Marcia Malsar. The Brazilian competed at the 1984 Paralympic Games herself, but this time around things didn’t go according to plan.

Perhaps the best response comes from the official Paralympics Twitter account, who captioned their video “What defines us is how well we rise after falling”.

With so many of the athletes having overcome seemingly insurmountable odds to represent their countries in Rio, the moment captured the resilient spirit that has come to embody the Paralympic Games.
