Surprise! Facebook has used all your personal information to do some weird ass studies.
Analysing tens of thousands of Facebook accounts, based on whether they mainly share photos of their cats or dogs and examining typical posts, the social network was able to determine a few things.
Like this: That biggest stereotype about cat lovers being single is true. They also express a wider range of emotions, including annoyance and exhaustion and, get this, have a strong interest in fantasy, anime, and science fiction.
Can we please have a moment to take that in, and laugh about all your friends who fit into that little box? When I say laugh, I mean in the best way, because cat lovers’ interests are way more interesting than dog lovers’. Sky explains that:
Cat people tend to prefer movies like The Hobbit, books like Brave New World, and TV series like Doctor Who.
Dog lovers, on the other hand, typically have 26 more friends than cat people and make more connections online – but cat lovers get invited to more events.
Interestingly, the study found that dog lovers tend to be more extroverted, upbeat, and – hahaha – luckier in love. But there’s more:
They also lean towards lighter entertainment, with favourite films including Fifty Shades of Grey, The Hangover and, of course, Marley & Me.
That’s where they get lame. Here are some charts:
While I am way more of a dog person, I am way more of a cat people person.
This data was collected from 160 000 U.S. users who had posted pet photos. It was aimed at creating advanced search and pattern spotting, useful for advertisers, obviously. Scary, ne?
But in the end, as Cari Romm puts it:
Do people like dogs or cats because their personalities drive them in a certain direction, or do they like dogs or cats because they want to convey that they’re the type of person to prefer one over the other?
Can we get a Hillary Clinton “Whoa” over here?
