Wednesday will see South Africa’s voters take to the booths to elect the next representative for their local government. For some wards, it will mean a new chapter of governance.

But this past weekend showed that others are just not ready to be a part of the change necessary to get this country moving forward.

Thousands of ANC supporters gathered at the party’s Siyanqoba rally at Buffalo City Stadium in East London on Sunday, and things became really embarrassing.

Aren’t these people supposed to be leaders of a country?

The first of these moments happened when President Zuma made his way around the podium. The ANC Women’s League formed a guard of honour and as he passed through them, the women bowed.

Yes, they bowed.

This is not a monarch we’re dealing with.

Another element of the rally that made my cheeks glow from embarrassment was the ANC’s adopted signature election dance move – the dab – being shown off more than one would like.

From the president to performers and even supporters, you wouldn’t think this was an election rally.

Can Wednesday just come already?
