I’m sure your high school rugby team was the bee’s knees, and you guys fought Any Given Sunday style for that extra inch, but you didn’t have the one and only Herschelle Gibbs playing pivot.
The Bishops schoolboy rugby star may well have had a career in professional rugby (or football, or tennis, or golf…) had he not chosen cricket – and anyone who remembers that 438 game thanks him profusely – but back in 1992 he did play in the Craven Week final for Western Province against Free State.
He wasn’t the only chap in the team that would go on to play international sport – here’s the Province starting XV:
The YouTube description just about sums it up:
One of the greatest finals in Craven Week history saw Free State take on a Western Province that boasted four future Springboks and a Protea, namely Corné Krige, Dave von Hoesslin, Louis Koen, Percy Montgomery and Herschelle Gibbs. Marius Goosen is another notable name from this group, enjoying a successful stint at the the Bulls, representing the Emerging Springboks and the Barbarians along the way.
Spoiler alert – watch the whole thing, but be sure to check out Herschelle at around 11:35. Seriously, it’s beautiful.
If you happen to have watched any recent schoolboy rugby you’ll know our youngsters know how to put on a show of running rugby, which is why we’re so stoked that School Sports Live have stepped up to the plate.
They’re a platform on YouTube (their channel HERE) that films and LIVE streams schoolboy rugby and other sport online, so that anyone in any part of the world with an Internet connection can watch games and sport live.
We can’t promise there’s another Herschelle out there, but then again he’s always been one of a kind.
