Let’s play a game of ‘how would you react’ quickly…
So you’re walking past a police van and the back door starts jangling around. Next thing you know two guys pop out and flee on foot – do you laugh and cheer wildly or alert the authorities?
Well in Pietermaritzburg it’s the former, evident from this video below:
Kind of worrying, right? Here’s News24 with more on the matter:
The pair were arrested for the possession of what police described as a “dangerous weapon”, and according to police, were being kept in custody at the back of the van while officers followed up on information regarding their arrest…
According to KZN police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala, the van was securely locked and police believed the bottom latch of the door was tampered with.
“We condemn the actions of the community who can be heard cheering the suspects on. It is a concern to see members of the community aiding the criminals to escape rather than preventing the escape,” Gwala said.
We all root for the underdog from time to time, I guess it’s human nature, but incidents like these are rather alarming.
The SAPS have a hard enough time getting suspects in the back of the van – we don’t need members of public helping them climb out.
